Frequently asked questions

Navigating life's challenges often comes with questions, especially when considering psychotherapy. Here, we've gathered answers to some of the most common enquiries parents and adults have about therapy and my services. I aim to provide clarity and ease any concerns you might have.

Frequently asked questions

I understand that beginning a therapeutic journey can bring up many questions. My goal is to make the process as transparent and comfortable as possible. Below, you'll find insights into what you can expect, my approach, and how I can support you.

What questions do people often ask you about therapy or your services before they book an appointment?

Common questions often revolve around 'What specific issues do you work with?', 'How long does therapy typically last?', 'What is your approach?', 'Is therapy confidential?', and 'What are your fees and payment options?'. I encourage you to contact me with any questions you have before booking.

What worries or concerns do people usually have when they're thinking about seeing a therapist, and how do you usually reassure them?

Many people worry about 'What if I don't know what to talk about?', 'Will I be judged?', or 'Is therapy really going to help me?'. I want to reassure clients that therapy is a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space. It's okay not to have all the answers; a therapist's  role is to support your exploration and discovery - at your own pace.

How is confidentiality maintained in therapy?

Confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy. All discussions are kept strictly private, with a few legal exceptions which will be fully explained during our first session. Your trust is paramount.

How long does each therapy session last?

Standard therapy sessions are 60 minutes long. This allows for sufficient time to explore topics in depth while maintaining a focused and productive pace.

Are you ACC registered? Yes, I am.

What professional body do you belong to?  I am registered with the Psychotherapy Board (PBANZ) and a member of the Association of Psychotherapists (APANZ).

Are there any particular steps someone needs to take before or during their first session with you?

No.  During the session, the main step is simply to arrive ready to share what's on your mind. It's a chance for us to get to know each other and discuss your goals for therapy.

What do you want people to really understand or feel confident about after reading this page about your services?

I want you to feel confident that I offer a supportive, expert, and empathetic environment where you can explore your challenges and work towards a meaningful outcome. You should feel assured that your well-being is my priority, and that seeking support is a positive step.

What types of clients do you typically work with?

I work with children, teenagers, parents and other adults, addressing a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, life transitions, and personal growth. My focus is on providing tailored support to meet individual needs.

What if I can't keep an appointment?

I ask for 24 hours notice of a cancellation. If you cancel with less than 24 hours notice you will need to pay for the missed appointment, unless the appointment time is used by someone else.  I reserve the right to cancel our contract after three failures to attend a scheduled appointment without notice; fees for missed appointments may still be payable.

What is the cost of a session, and how do I pay?

Please contact me directly for current session fees. Payment is usually due at the end of each session and can be made via bank transfer or cash. We can discuss payment options during our initial contact, and any financial supports that may be available for you.
